OKAY! OKAY!
so today i had a jazz competition at provo high school! And there is both good and bad news!
BAD:
Our third song rushed SOOOO bad. I think it was adrenaline.
On the above mentioned third song, NIGHT FLIGHT from DARK ORCHID, i had two solos. One at the beginning and one at the end. i was not satisfied with the first solo!
The piano they had on stage was a strange and obscure one, and it sounded like crap! I think it was the felt... crappy felt really makes a difference. It sounded all muffled and the keys felt weird, they had like a spring action almost.
GOOD:
The first song was really good. We didn't groove as well as we could have, but it still popped and shtuff. It was called THE HEART OF THE MATTER, and it was very much matter of the heartish.
We had a major ego boost, which i think helped our performance, cuz the band before us and after us, the only other bands that we got to listen to, really sucked.
The first band sounded cheesy. SO CHEEEEEEEESY. And the saxophones were terrible.
the band after us had a lots of problems:
They had no concert dress, they were just wearing sunday best, and they were all colorful and unprofessional, while we wore all black, the only ones there wearing all black, and we looked pretty SCHNAZZY.
Their pianist wasn't experienced (i could tell).
Their trumpet section had no idea what they were doing (for example: you know those muffler things that go inside the bells of trumpets, that make them sound all coooool, well in a jazz band, if you don't have one and the song requires that you do, you drop out and let the other trumpet players who do have them, play. otherwise it sounds like crap, and that's exactly what they did. IT SOUNDED LIKE CRAP)
We walked in on them rehearsing so that we could get our instruments and shtuff, and they were still working on intonation. Intonation... right before a performance... right.
MORE GOOD NEWS:
The second solo i had to play in NIGHT FLIGHT, went soooo good. I think i played it the best i have ever played it.
The judge was RAY SMITH, the director of jazz music at BYU. And he's sooo cool. He has a cane and everything, so he just walks on stage when he's performing, and pulls out his saxophone, and goes crazy!!! HE'S SO COOOOL
Afterwards, AJ, Clayton, Tyler, Alicia (my sister), Alicia (a different alicia), Jenni, Istoria, and Elaura (spelled right?), and me went to the mall to get food. And we wanted Mr. Clark to come too, cuz he's cool too. But you know how the school district officials would get all angry if he came with us, soooo...
we told him that we were NOT going to the mall, NOT going to panda express, NOT going to sit near the merry go round. So he just happened to go there when we decided to go. And we realized that we were still wearing black, so we were like a gang, the mafia, sometin like that.
So clark said to tell anyone who asks us why we were dressed up, that our Grandma had died, and we were all cousins. So from now on, i'm calling Clark, Cousin Clark, cuz he's my cousin.
Oh! forgot, out of all of us, only two of us had driven, Elaura and Istoria. But Elaura just got her license and can't drive us for six months, so eight of us had to fit in Istoria's tiny car. It was kinda uncomfortable, and we all had to practically cuddle to fit. oh, and on the way home, there were coppers everywhere, so we had to duck, so that we wouldn't be pulled over.
Well... that's kinda it...
so...
That's it people.
